When going through graduate school, one of the certificates I was able to earn was in Project Management. At the time, it seemed like a really cool career path, which is why I took the requisite courses to get the certificate.

However, after seeing what project managers actually do in real life, I decided it was something I would never want to do. So there sits my Project Management certificate, nicely framed, sitting in a box in storage and adding some more fluff to my resume.

The things that disillusioned me to Project Management can be succinctly summed up in many of the “funny but true” sayings of those in the profession that illustrate the constant battles a Project Manager has to face on a daily basis.

Strangely enough, many of these sayings also relate well to the Network Marketing field (although Network Marketing is something I actually enjoy doing).

Here are some of my favorite Project Management quotes as they relate to Network Marketing:

“It takes one woman 9 months to have a baby. You can’t produce a baby in 1 month by impregnating 9 women”

One of the misconceptions Project Managers constantly face is the idea that you can get a project done faster simply by throwing more resources at it. Some things just take a certain amount of time to accomplish and no amount of resources will make it go any faster.

In Network Marketing, we often run into people who have some very unrealistic goals as to how much money they can make in a very short amount of time. Even if you have 16 hours a day and an unlimited budget, it is going to take time to learn the profession and grow a sizeable income in Network Marketing.

As Ray Higdon would say, Network Marketing IS the shortcut. There is no shortcut to the shortcut.

“Good, Fast, Cheap – You can only have two”

Project Managers are always under pressure to deliver projects on time, under budget, and with high quality. The reality is that you can really only have two of those.

If you want to finish a project quickly and have a high quality product, it is going to cost a lot of money.

If you want a project done quickly and cheaply, it isn’t going to be the best quality.

And if you want a high quality project done cheaply, it is going to take more time.

In Network Marketing, we often speak to people who want lots of high quality leads, they want them now, and they want them to be free…good, fast, and cheap.

And when we tell people that those type of leads don’t exist (well technically, they do exist, but they’re your warm market), they become either disappointed that we don’t have what they’re looking for so they go to someone else who will promise them everything they want, or they become skeptical and accuse us of running a scam and they likewise go to someone else who will promise them everything they want.

But the reality is this – you will have to work hard no matter what kind of leads you want. Furthermore…

If you want fast, cheap leads, they aren’t going to be the best quality.

If you want high-quality leads fast, it’s going to cost you some money.

And if you want high-quality leads for cheap, it is going to take some time.

“There’s never enough time to do it right first time but there’s always enough time to go back and do it again.”

I’ve found this saying to be so painfully true in the world of Project Management. I’ve seen project sponsors insist on a go-live date no matter what, saying “failure is not an option” the whole way.

What they don’t realize is that although failure may not be an option, it sure as heck is a very likely possibility. And one of the worst results I’ve seen is a project that ended up costing an organization tens of millions in lost revenue in just one month because they cut short one of the key tasks in the project to hit that go-live date. Inevitably, we had to go back and spend several more months cleaning up the mess at even more cost to the organization.

In Network Marketing, you often find people who have a particular goal they want to reach in the next 3 to 6 months, but want to spend as little money and effort as possible.

So 6 months go by and they’re no further along in their business than they were when they started. So they start looking for another solution that requires no money or effort. Another 6 months go by and they’ve still made no progress.

Meanwhile, if they had just invested the money and effort and went all-in with a proven system to begin with, they would be well on their way to a 6 figure income after 12 months, instead of still wasting their time searching for the mythical fast, cheap, easy way to success.

If you’ve got the mindset that…

-You’re looking for a proven system that works rather than an empty promise of a fast, cheap, easy way out

-You’re willing to take action and do what it takes to make your business a success

-And you’re willing to put the effort into making a proven system work for you
