So you’ve followed the plan your company and sponsor laid out for you – You made a list of everyone you know and you called each one of them and set up an appointment. You presented to each one of them, making sure to give a product sample, play the promo video, and get them on the phone with your upline.
You’ve done everything you were supposed to do and everyone has said no. Now you’re sitting there asking yourself, “now what?”
When Leah Rae and I found ourselves in this situation, we asked our upline for advice. We were told to “revisit your warm market”. Now, this was something we really didn’t want to do. We didn’t want to be the ones in the family that got uninvited from all the weddings and funerals. We didn’t want to be the ones that everyone avoids because everyone knew that we were just calling to pitch them on our business again.
Many of the people we talk to and help have a similar experience with their upline. To be perfectly fair, the lack of good advice isn’t really your sponsor’s fault. They are just telling you to do what they did to be successful. The problem is that the way they found success isn’t always duplicable.
Most people don’t have an amazing warm market to recruit from. For most people, after all of their friends and family have said no, their business is done. They give up and quit.
But Leah Rae and I made the decision to run our business by this motto…
“I will either find a way, or I will make one.”
And that’s when our REAL education began and we dove head first into Cold Market Recruiting.
Cold Market Recruiting – Where to Find Leads
So we started investing in ourselves and, over the next several months, bought thousands of dollars in training programs. We implemented every strategy we learned. After work, I would visit the mall, car sales lots, furniture stores, jewelry stores, health supplement stores, fitness gyms, etc and prospect people. Leah Rae would spend her days cold calling professionals.
I got a Meetup.com account, joined a bunch of groups and prospected people there too. Leah would attend classes that were posted in Natural Food Grocery stores and get more leads at those.
If we went to a restaurant or trade show, guess what we were doing? Prospecting more people.
I even hustled a few job fairs to get more leads.
Cold Market Recruiting – Does It Work?
To one extent or another, we tried almost every cold market recruiting strategy out there.
Did these recruiting techniques work? Yes.
From our experience, just about any well-founded cold market recruiting strategy will get you some good results if you work it long enough.
Was it easy to do?…absolutely not. We had to overcome a LOT of fear to approach strangers and strike up a conversation and then ask for their name and phone number. When we first started cold market recruiting, there were times when I would approach someone and get slapped down HARD. The first time it happened, it literally took me a few days to recover and gather up the courage to go prospecting again.
When Leah Rae was cold calling professionals (realtors, salespeople, etc), she would sometimes get yelled at, threatened, and hung up on. I remember one day, she called me at work saying she felt like throwing up because of the abuse she had taken from one of them. But even after taking that abuse, guess what she was doing the very next day? She was calling more professionals.
Cold Market Recruiting – What it Takes
Cold Market Recruiting isn’t easy. The process may be simple, but you have got to have a lot of mental toughness to do it. This is where your “why” becomes so important. Your motivation to succeed in this business has to be 10 times stronger than the fears you will face in cold market recruiting.
Not only do you need mental toughness, but cold market recruiting is also a skill that you have to learn. Not only do you need to know what to say (that’s the easy part), but you need to be able to say it with confidence and posture. And that is a skill that will only come with practice.
You won’t be very good at it at first. People will sense that you don’t have a lot of confidence or posture when you talk to them. And when some people sense weakness, that is when you will start to take some abuse…like me, you will get slapped down every now and then. Like my wife, you will get chewed out over the phone.
But if you’re ready and willing to take a little abuse and keep going, you will eventually develop enough confidence and posture where you won’t get that kind of reaction anymore when you approach a stranger. As you practice your cold market recruiting skills, you will start to get more leads and more sign-ups.
